Young Company Finance Scotland Conference 2019

Friday 13th September 2019, 9:00am to 4:30pm

Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa, Edinburgh

Each year YCF’s annual conference takes a broad theme that gives a variety of speakers the opportunity to set out their own knowledge or experience in different ways. There will be talks by industry professionals – investors, analysts, business advisers – interspersed with presentations by entrepreneurs from early stage high growth companies.

Teams & Team Building is the theme for this year's conference. Investors almost without exception talk about judging a company by the quality of its team before committing any funds. Entrepreneurs, who tend to be independent, strong-minded types, do not always find it easy to build a team which ticks all the boxes required for company growth.

This event will look at the issues of building a team and keeping it motivated so that the business can reach its full potential. Besides investors, advisers, and coaches, we will invite representatives from some successful young companies who have met some of the challenges, to tell us about how they did it - the problems encountered, and how they were overcome.

The issues to be explored at YCF 2019 will include:-

  • Why investors focus on the management team, and how they make their decisions;
  • The ideal makeup of a team at different stages of a company’s development;
  • How the team can be motivated – share options and other incentives;
  • What happens to the team as the company grows or is acquired.

Speakers already confirmed:-

  • Chris Wardle, Senior Investment Manager, Foresight Group LLP - a UK private equity investment manager with approximately £2.8 billion of assets under management;
  • Bruce Douglas, director of Confidas People - a consultancy which specialises in management team due diligence for mid-market private equity firms and their portfolio companies.

There will also be around a dozen early stage companies exhibiting at the conference, and featured in our Young Company Showcase brochure, whose delegates will be part of the audience.

There are 150 places available. The audience is likely to be a mix of 25%-30% delegates from young companies, 20% - 30% investors, with the remainder professional advisers, universities, incubators, public sector agencies – all devoted to helping young companies grow and develop.

Four sessions (two each morning and afternoon) are planned each including one industry speaker and one or two young companies.
