This year Carbogenics is celebrating its 10th anniversary, marking a decade of developing innovative carbon solutions from waste materials, and building its position within the growing biochar and anaerobic digestion sectors.
Founded as a spin-out from the University of Edinburgh, Carbogenics was established with a clear ambition: to develop technologies that can help address the challenge of carbon emissions while creating value from waste materials.
Ten years on, the company has developed from an early-stage university spin-out into a global biocarbon business, with its technology now being applied across multiple markets and its first US production facility secured in New Mexico.
Over the past decade, Carbogenics has focused on developing and commercialising its proprietary carbon technology, with particular expertise in the anaerobic digestion (AD) sector. Its CreChar product is an engineered biochar designed to support AD performance, with full-scale commercial trials demonstrating benefits including increased biomethane production and reductions in hydrogen sulphide and ammonia.
The company has worked closely with AD operators to develop and validate its technology under real-world operating conditions, building experience across commercial-scale plants and developing an increasingly detailed understanding of how engineered biochar can be integrated into anaerobic digestion systems.
Alongside its commercial development, Carbogenics has secured support from organisations including Innovate UK, Scottish Enterprise, Zero Waste Scotland, IBioIC and Ofwat to advance its research and development programme. The company has also continued to explore new applications for its carbon technology, including wastewater treatment.
The anniversary comes at an important point in Carbogenics' development. Having established its foundations in Scotland and the UK, the company is now looking to build its international presence, with the United States representing a significant new opportunity.
Carbogenics USA was launched in 2025, and the company has since secured its first US production facility in Raton, New Mexico. The expansion is opening opportunities to work with new feedstocks, industries and partners while supporting the development of carbon solutions tailored to the needs of the US market.
The company recently welcomed Carbogenics USA Chief of Staff Sydney Lienemann and Dangerous Ventures investor Ward Hendon to Scotland from New Mexico as part of a visit designed to share knowledge between the company's UK and US operations.
During their visit, they toured Strathendrick Biogas Ltd, courtesy of Robert Kennedy, providing an opportunity to see an anaerobic digestion facility first-hand and gain further insight into the day-to-day realities of the industry that has played such an important role in Carbogenics' development.
The Carbogenics USA visit to Scotland coincided with Carbogenics' 10th anniversary celebrations, which brought together current and former colleagues, clients, partners, investors, academics and friends of the company to reflect on the past decade.
“We would never have reached this milestone without the incredible support of our team, investors, partners and clients. Over the past 10 years, we have learnt so much and built Carbogenics here in Scotland, developing our research, creating new products and building the commercial expertise that underpins the business today.
“What is particularly exciting about our next chapter is the opportunity to take that knowledge and experience further. New Mexico gives us the access, space and opportunity to grow, while building on everything we have achieved in Scotland. There aren’t two separate Carbogenics stories. Carbogenics UK and Carbogenics USA are part of the same journey, built on the same innovation, knowledge and ambition.
“As we look ahead to the next 10 years, we are excited to share what we have learnt, continue developing our technology and pursue the opportunities ahead of us on a global scale.”
Lidia Kryznowek, COO, speaking at the anniversaryThe company believes the next decade will bring significant opportunities as interest in carbon removal, biochar, waste valorisation and circular economy technologies continues to grow.
Carbogenics will continue to develop its existing work in anaerobic digestion while expanding into new applications and markets, with the US expansion complementing its established UK and European activities.
“Our focus now is firmly on the next phase of growth. We see a significant opportunity to take the technology, expertise and commercial experience into a biocarbon platform of products designed to address key global challenges and markets: the energy transition; water scarcity and soil husbandry.
"The next 10 years will be about rapid scaling, growing our biocarbon production to over 50,000 tons per annum across 3 continents- Europe, North America and Asia. As we build to a meaningful scale, we will continue to innovate and respond to market needs through world class R&D.
"Our 10th anniversary is therefore less about looking back and more about looking ahead. We have a clear ambition for where Carbogenics can go next, and we are excited about what we can build from here as a key actor delivering solutions to the global climate crisis."
Professor Ed Craig, CEOAs Carbogenics enters its second decade, the company remains focused on its original ambition: developing practical carbon solutions that transform waste into valuable products while contributing to long-term carbon sequestration.
“I would like to thank all of our investors and shareholders for their continuous support and wise counsel over the last 10 years. Without them we would not have started on this incredible journey 10 years ago. I look forward to the next 10 years of success and growth.”
