Roslin was introduced as an international place for innovation and investment to Nobel Prize Laureates, internationally acclaimed researchers and scientists and over 1,000 delegates at the 3rd World Nobel Prize Laureate Summit (WNPLS), a high profile annual summit in China that took place on 2nd and 3rd September.
While human health is a considerable focus for many of the people working in life sciences, the industry in Scotland also includes aquaculture, plant health and animal health.
When it comes to animal health, few sites can rival the University of Edinburgh’s Easter Bush Campus which has the largest concentration of animal science related expertise in Europe and allows delivery of solutions to global challenges within livestock industries and both veterinary and human medicine.
The Roslin Institute is a world-leading research institute made famous for creating Dolly the Sheep, (celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2016), the first mammal cloned from an adult cell. The Roslin Institute also serves as the research arm of the adjacent Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies, with both forming part of the College of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at the University of Edinburgh with approximately 700 members of staff, 900 undergraduate and 150 postgraduate students.
Our CEO, John Mackenzie, on stage at WNPLS introducing the world famous Roslin Institute talking about technology transfer and investment in past and present developments, as well as future collaborative opportunities and innovative projects.
As part of a 20 year vision and plan to 2025 to develop a research and innovation campus, the University of Edinburgh, Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council and the Scottish Government are investing more than $375M ($201M spent to date) to develop the Easter Bush Campus as a world leading Centre of Excellence in Animal Sciences and Food Security.
This ongoing capital development includes The Roslin Institute ($90M), the Royal (Dick) School of Veterinary Studies ($63M), with both opened in 2011 and also a new Innovation Centre and Campus Hub ($48M), currently under construction.
The Roslin Innovation Centre will be the gateway to the Easter Bush Campus and a catalyst to establish this new research and innovation campus as a world leader in efforts to address food security and alleviation of poverty in developing countries.
